Renault Clio 25 years: congratulations!

One of the most important cars of Renault celebrates its 25 years and the AUTO SAPO recalls the key moments and figures.

Launched in 1990, the Clio has replaced the famous R5 and quickly became a success. Twenty-five years later and more than 12.5 million units later, the Clio remains one of the most important models in the range Renault, and in Portugal’s frequent customer first among the best selling models.

In 1990, the Clio has replaced the popular Renault 5 in the segment of small utilities, but immediately threw himself into the greatest adventures on the experience gained from the Renault 19. The Clio was streamlined, spacious for a car with a length of 3.71 meters, presenting latest technology engines and a good dynamic behavior. Qualities that were more common in upper segments proposals.

The style was a success and the first generation of the Clio was awarded several prizes, including the “Car of the Year” in 1991. An important achievement for the Clio, before the tough competition of the Peugeot 205, Citroën AX, Fiat Uno, Opel Corsa, Ford Fiesta and many others.

The Clio quickly became a benchmark in the segment, with váriuas news to give you highlights. Recall RT version 1.7, for example, that provided already at the time, central locking, electric windows and seat belts adjustable in height at the front, as standard equipment, to which was added the braking system ABS, and optionally .

One of CLIO strengths was the range that provided with the RL versions, RN and RT receiving the company special editions such as Be-Bop and Chipie, in addition to the more sporting S, 16V (1991) and Williams 2.0 16V (1993), today objects of worship, with very high prices.

Already Baccara version of Clio, also launched in 1991, had no reason to be “jealous” of cars of higher segments, offering equipment and dose of luxury never before seen in the segment: leather seats in two colors and regulation in height and lumbar support, applications in walnut (dash throttle the speeds and ports Enclosure), air conditioning, power steering and radio controls on the steering column, were some of its assets, in a car, definitely top notch. An absolute novelty!

And because Renault has always been associated with imaging technology, the Clio has taken a step forward to present themselves “dressed” by tram in 1995, an unprecedented version that allowed us to explore a concept of mobility at the time very unusual. About 50 electric Clios were available to conduct tests in France, particularly in the town of Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines, as part of praxitele program in 1997.

The Clio at its first “incarnation” was a winning bet: in 1998, 4 million Clio had been produced in seven different countries.

But that same year, the model took a step forward, and the Clio II appeared in order to offer more refinement and versatility to their users. The new model had just 6 cm than the original version, but appeared with security enhanced by ABS as standard and assisted steering on all versions, as well as driver airbags and passengers in addition to the availability of side airbags, optional .

A diesel version with 1.9-liter engine, joined the 1.2 l, 1.4 l le 1.6 powered by gasoline. Any one of them represented a breakthrough in terms of fuel consumption, CO2 emissions (complying with the Euro 3 standard) and of course, driving pleasure.

In 2000, the Clio II received new sports breath and fans cheered. Renault Sport “attacked” on two fronts: first was the Clio 2.0 16V to know the light of day, with 172 horsepower and strong performance, dynamic agility on the road. A few months later, Renault Sport surprised to radicalize the offer with an unexpected car: the Clio V6 24V, 230 hp engine placed in the center position (just behind the only two passengers that housed). Of course, a car these had limited success, because the balance was not phenomenal …

In 2001 the Clio II is subjected to a complete restyling. The exterior design becomes more dynamic, the carrier quality sees increased. A new range of engines is also introduced, with emphasis on the K9K turbo diesel 1.5 dCi common rail. Also new to register were the introduction of EBA (emergency braking assistance), twin headlights, seat belts with belt tensioners, automatic climate control and rain and light sensors.

More than 5.3 mihões units is the final balance of sales of the second generation Clio.

The Clio III came on the scene in 2005, without thereby discontinuing from the production of the Clio II for some time, now to be called Clio Campus. The new Clio returned to growth (3.99 meters) and has also become more comfortable with five real seats. The largest glass area (up inside cars in its class) offered another light the interior and improved acoustic isolation as by passing the Clio also become the first car of its equipped segment with “hands-free card” and have rear parking sensors some versions.

The Clio III placed the emphasis on driving pleasure and wore a suspension based on the Mégane II used. If the side of comfort exchange was worth dynamically Clio earned so little because it was aburguesando. Six engines – three petrol and three diesel – are now available. And in 2007, the TCe 100, the precursor driver of the strategy “downsizing” segment, was added to the range. As for safety, the Clio III is the first car also in the segment to collect five stars in EuroNCAP crash tests, presenting the best in class braking system that combined the ABS with EBD (Electronics Distribution System Brake) and EBA (Emergency Brake Assist System), with ESP (Electronic Stability Program) is available as an option. With all this, it was not surprising that the Clio III return to be considered “Car of the Year” in 2006. That same year, the Clio Renault Sport also made its appearance.

In 2008, Clio celebrated its 18th anniversary with the creation of the first version of the Clio Break, which has also received the Carminat TomTom navigation system of the second generation.

I, II, III … and in 2012, was born the Clio IV. And although launched only three years ago, the latest version of the best seller of Renault already rivals its ancestors in terms of popularity.

A saga of 25 years is far from stick around …
